Painting Description

Opara Jahswill uses this eye-catching piece to illustrate the importance of traditional wrestling in African culture. Lutte Traditionnelle also known as Traditional Wrestling is a style of West African folk wrestling, known as Laamb in Senegal, Boreh in The Gambia, Evala in Togo, and KoKowa / Kokawa in Hausa areas of Nigeria and Niger, or simply Lutte Traditionnelle, in Niger and Burkina Faso. Two fighters compete in a circular ring, in more formal events bound by sandbags. Each fighter attempts to eject the other from the ring, though they can win by knocking the other off their feet or onto all fours. In the Igbo culture traditional wrestling is a very popular sport in the Igbo community. It is a practice and acknowledgement of skill and strength as well as promotion of indigenous language, culture, norms, values, and traditions by young, physically capable Igbo men. In Igbo Land a man is believed to prove his physical strength when he is able to fight off his aggressors and so wrestling shows strength and courage. Before the wrestling season young men who will be competing train for months. A young man who comes out victorious in a traditional wrestling is admired and respected by all, he is seen as a warrior or a distinguished wrestler.
