Painting Description

Mustapha’s theory explores every subject that makes a human, human. Through various forms
of symbolism in this artwork, from the bitten apple referencing decision making, especially
biblically. The serpent is another biblical reference, representing temptation. Bare feet showing
vulnerability, the dagger a tendency for violence. The flower, a lily, represents sensitivity and
emotion. The book, the innate drive to learn, to research, the Nsibidi symbol on the palm
signifying a journey and the hat, faith, whatever form it might come in. Yet, in the grander
scheme, Mustapha holds on to this all encompassing tree, with one hand, a metaphor for the
delicate balance and unity of these diverse elements, creating a captivating tableau of what it
means to be human
